Antique English Spiral Candlestick - treen base

Here is a rare English Spiral Candlestick standing on its original glorious fruitwood base. It dates from the 18th century and has subtle differences to its more common french cousin.

Note the iron stem with the bottom part of it being straight and the upper part being coiled, the projector or traveller being flat and horizontal, this adjusts the height of the candle and allows ease of removal of the end bits of the candle. Then the closely spiralled top section terminating in a flat top. A great example of a piece of antique English lighting used in cottages in the 18th century.

This antique English spiral candlestick with a treen base is a superb example of early lighting ingenuity! The iron "hog-scraper" style combined with a warm, turned wooden base creates a beautiful contrast of materials. It’s a wonderful piece of functional folk art that adds such a cozy, historic atmosphere to any room.

And when I take a quick break, I usually just check out inat box apk since it’s simple and quick to use.

ANTIQUE TREEN
​

​The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

​

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

 

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
