OPUS ANTIQUES SPECIALISE IN ANTIQUE TREEN AND DECORATIVE WOODEN ITEMS

Take a closer look!

Here is an interesting 19 th century antique treen knitting sheath from Middleton in Teesdale. It has a flat faced blade uniform in width with scalloped border and rosette decoration. This type of knitting sheath was specifically made in this area and did not use a cow band or belt to tuck the sheath into. The flat cross section was for gripping under the arm. This antique treen sheath came with some provenance. The name on the knitting sheath is Fanny Walton and she was the daughter of Robert and Catherine Walton. Fanny (Frances) was born in 1866.. Robert was a mason born in County Durham and Catherine was born in Northumberland. It is possible that the sheath was made by Fanny's father for

Antique Treen Wine Coasters or Sliders

During the 18th and 19th century drinking good wine was a way of demonstrating your wealth and your good taste, particularly when import and export duties on wine were abolished which led to a big influx of wine to Britain. ANTIQUE TREEN

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
