Antique Spice Towers - look closely at the labels!

In a previous blog on spice towers I mentioned that when antique spice towers were bought they would have been blank, with no labels. Depending on what spices were used in the household depended on what labels were used.
The image of the four tier antique spice tower shows this with it having two labels for cinnamon, obviously a favourite in that particular house,

These antique spice towers are such clever pieces of craftsmanship, especially with those tiny hand-inked labels. It is fascinating to see how they stacked together to preserve flavors like nutmeg and mace for generations. They really are a beautiful blend of early kitchen utility and art!
