A 19th century go to bed carved in yew wood.  The lid pulls off for storage of matches. The matches could be lit by striking either the underside of the base or on the raised section on the body of the box. Both would have given friction when struck. The lit match would be placed in the hole in the finial of the lid and would have given enough light to 'Go to Bed'. They were also used as desk items for lighting sticks of wax used for sealing letters.

This one is a good size measuring 10cm h x 4.9cm w.
