A rare find, antique coloured tapers/candles circa 1830's still in their original box.
On the side of the box is J.C & J.Fields Ltd. London S.E established in 1642 in the reign of Charles 1
The set was manufactured by J.C & J. Fields Ltd of London who, Grace's Guide tells us were ' wax chandlers'. Their factory was in Lambeth and their retail outlet in Wigmore Street. They changed their name in 1820 to J.C & J. Fields Ltd through to about 1850 with this company name -  they continued to trade and manufacture under various family names until the 1950's, so these tapers date from around 1820 - 1850's.
The box measures approx.10cm /4 inches X 10cm/ 4 inches and is 4cm/ 1.5 inches deep.
Inside there are 12 cream coloured candles ( 11 unused ) and 7 in various other colours ( 4 unused ). Each unused candle is about 9cm/ 3.5 inches long - some have warped over the years but still usable

    Antique Treen

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
