Two different 19th century Tunbridge Ware "Go to Beds" for storing and protecting matches. A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. 
They both have a ridged bottom for creating the friction to light the match.
