This is a 19th century barrel shaped Tunbridge Ware go to bed. The lid has a boss in the centre to place the match, it unscrews for storage of the matches.
Note the ridges on the sides and the concentric circles on the base for striking the match against for friction.
It measures 4cm h x 2..2cm.
A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. Note this one still has its striking paper to the base of the box.
