A 19th century boxwood travelling candlestick, the top which protects the candle whilst travelling unscrews from the base and screws into the side as a hollow tube acting as a handle. The base unscrews for the storage of three or four matches.
Note the base has concentric circles for striking the matches.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
