A mid 1800's straw splitter stamped with J Austen who was a wood turner at this time.
Thisantique treen straw splitter has five different sizes one with 8 fins, a seven fin, a six a five and a four. The straw would be pulled through one of these splitters dividing the straw into different thicknesses of splints depending on which size was required.
This straw would then go on to be used to make baskets, hats etc
It measures 9cm h x 5cm w at its widest part x 4cm d
