This is a very nicely turned early 1800s salt, note the stepped base. It has a good colour and poatina.
This salt measures 5.7cm w at the top x 4.5cm w.
These salts as its name  implies were for putting salt in and placing on the dining table. The large elaborate examples are known as master salts and were used by the master of the house, the smaller ones were used by lower ranked house members and staff.
