An early 19th century pocket nutcracker, of open ring format.

These nutcrackers were carried around in the pocket and used to crack hazelnuts. They were particularly popular when going to theatre where bags of hazelnuts were consumed, similar to bags of popcorn eaten at the cinema nowadays.

Similar ones are illustrated in Treen for the Table by J Levi.
