A finely carved late 18th century antique treen pipe tamper in the shape of a shoe with carved details for the buttons. There are initials carved on the end of the stopper AWS.
Pipe tampers were used to 'correct the draw' by pressing down the burning contents in the small round pipe bowl. Much better than getting a burnt finger!
