An antique treen nutmeg grater in the shape of an egg, which unscrews in the middle to reveal the grater. The grater unscrews for storage of nutmegs. Minor surface crack to inside grater rim.
 
These nutmeg graters were status symbols as nutmeg was very expensive. they would have been carried around in a pocket and used to grate nutmeg into mulled wine or maybe onto hot buttered muffins. c1830
