A 19th century ligum vitae Go to Bed with interestingly what looks like some old matches inside.

The lid unscrews for storage of matches, the underside of the base has striker paper to light a match. There is an aperture in the lid to place a match.

It measures 8.5cm h x 4.4cm w.

The lit match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. They were also used as desk items for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters.
