This is a lovely lignum vitae Go to bed of unusually large size. The boss on the lid would have been to hold a match, which when lit would  have given enough light to go to bed, hence its name. They were also used as desk items, where the lit match would be used to light a wax seal stick for sealing letters.
On the underside of the base there would have been striker paper to light the match.
A lovely piece with great figuring, colour and unusual size. It measures 10cm h including the boss x 5.6cm w.
