A very good 19 th century knitting sheath carved as a shoe, probably from Teesdale. Featured in Dr Ian McFeeters book on knitting sheaths.
Carved with crosses and lines to the handle and the sole has decoration to imitate stitches.
Note the small brass plate to the end for protecting the knitting needle hole.
It measures 23cm l x 5cm w at the widest point x 2cm h.
