A late 1800's antique treen knitting sheath from the Durham area. It's carved from oak, rectangular in section with a slightly curving shaft ending in a scroll. It has a diagonal slot for attaching to the cowband.
Interestingly there is some scratch carved decorations to the front and sides, a bird, crown and flowers. A similarly illustrated one from Brear's book is said to come from Coxhoe a village 5 miles south Durham city.
