An unusual 19th century Go to bed in the shape of a wine bottle. Made from ebony wood with a contrasting fruit wood top to represent the cork. The small box unscrews in the middle for storage of matches. The base of the bottle has concentric circles to create friction and would have been used as a match striker.
It measures 8.5cm h x 3cm e.
Go to Beds – The matches which were stored in the boxes, when lit one would have been placed in the boss in the lid. This was used to melt wax sticks for sealing letters and the match would give enough light to go to bed, hence its name.
