A 19th century Go to bed in the shape of a chess piece, a rook. The lid unscrews for storage of matches, the underside of the base has striker paper to light a match. There is an aperture in the lid to place a match.
It measures 8.5cm h x 4.4cm w.
The lit match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. They were also used as desk items for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters.
