An antique treen Go to Bed of large size well turned from walnut wood with a lovely wooden boss to the lid for placing the wax match in. When lit it would give enought light to go to bed rather than use candles. Antique Go to Beds were also used as desk items for lighting sticks of wax for sealing letters.
The lid comes off for storage of the matches and to the base which has a slight recess to hold the striker paper to light the matches.
