A 19th century antique treen "Go to Bed' turned from ebony.
Note this has a place for both the wax match and also a candle socket. The top unscrews for storage of the matches.
Note the castellated top. Very good quality and a great example.
"Go to Beds" were for storing and protecting matches. A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. They were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters and hence would be found on desks.
