A 19th century lignum vitae Go to bed box for storing and protecting matches. A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. Note this one still has its striking paper to the base of the box. It measures approx 6cm h x 2.5cm w x 2.5cm d.
