A 19th century lignum vitae Go to bed, with storage space for matches and still retaining its striker paper to the base. There is a mother of pearl inset to the lid with a small hole where a match would be inserted once lit. This would give you enough light to go to bed. They were also used for lighting sticks of wax seals for sealing letters.
