A very nice antique treen "go to bed" turned from lignum vitae with a concave base with ridges to the side for creating friction needed to strike the match. The match would be place in the turned lignum boss to the lid. This would give enough light to go upstairs to bed. The lid unscrews for storage of matches Also they were used for lighting wax sticks.
