A 19th century Go to Bed turned from sycamore wood. Most of these little boxes were made from lignum vitae or ebony so its nice to see one in a light wood.

Matches were stored inside and then one placed on top in the mother of pearl aperture when neede.d

A lit match would be placed in the hole in the finial of the lid and would have given enough light to 'Go to Bed'. They were also used as desk items for lighting sticks of wax used for sealing letters.
