A good 19th century lignum vitae Go to Bed, nicely shaped body and lid.

The lid unscrews for storage of matches. The matches could be lit by striking either the underside of the base. The lit match would be placed in the hole in the finial of the lid and would have given enough light to 'Go to Bed'. They were also used as desk items for lighting sticks of wax used for sealing letters.
