This is an antique treen 19th century Go to Bed made from lignum vitae with lovely figuring. The top unscrews for storage of matches. The base still retaining its striker paper.
It measures 8.5cm h x 3.7cm w 
A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. They were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters.
