A 19th century ebony and fruit wood Go to Bed in the shape of a chess piece, the rook. Note this Go to Bed is not only a match holder but has space on the lid to either light a small candle or a match. It unscrews in the middle for storage. The underside of the base has the remains of the striker paper to light the matches.

This is example is a good size measuring  approx 8.5cm h x 4cm w.

A match could be placed  in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters.
