An antique Scottish quaich dating from the the first half of the 1800s. It is intricately carved with a basket weave pattern. On the rim of the quaich is an inscription in Scottish gaelic 'Squab Asi' which means drink up.
It stands on a raised foot. The bowl measures 6.5cm w excluding the handles and 10cm w including them.
It has a couple of minor repairs to the tips of the handles.
Similar examples are illustrated in Treen for the Table.
A Quaich is a shallow curved bowl for drinking spirits, larger ones were used for ceremonial purposes.
