This is a 19th century oak candle box which can hang on a wall or be freestanding. It has a sliding lid which is inlaid with love token symbols, hearts, diamond and a roundel. The box has a good colour. It measures 38cm h x 10cm d x 13cm w.
Candle boxes were used to protect the candles, which were often made from animal fat, so rats would try and eat the candles, hence putting the candles in a lidded box and hanging the box on the wall protected the precious candles.
