This is a 19th century Irish box, probably from the Killarney Region. It is made from arbutus wood, with an  inlaid piece of stringing to create a pannel on the lid.

The box measures 38cm w x 7cm d x 5.5cm h.

Killarney Ware was produced as souvenir gifts for tourists  visiting the Killarney Lakes in Ireland and is quite distinctive using contasting woods for the inlay.

Arbutus wood was grown in the ares and has a beautiful appearance similar to Yew wood.
