A very nicely turned lignum vitae 'Go to Bed' for storing matches in. The base has a series of concentric circles, which gives friction, and acts as the match striker. The top unscrews for storage of matches. At the top is a small finial with a hole in the top for a single match to be inserted. These antique 'Go to Beds' were used to give enough light to get into bed avoiding using a candle.
They were also used to light the sticks of sealing wax for letters.
