This is a 19th century Mahogany cased compass. It has brass hinges and a brass locking clasp. It has a stop pin that when pushed down will hold the needle still. These Explorer's compasses were popular during the early to mid 1800's when people went on their travels.

This one measures 6.5cm w x 6.5cm d x 1.9cm h.
