This is a great piece a Georgian Flintlock tinder pistol. It has a mahogany handle and steel body, trigger, the front supported by its original steel stand..
Over the years, gun makers developed the lighters making them less heavy, smaller and more efficient. Most of them retained the flintlock mechanism and pistol grip, including the original trigger. It resembles a flintlock pistol, but without a barrel and legs so it could be stood upright for use.
The idea was to produce sparks from the flint being struck which in turn would light dry tinder, to light the candle. The lit candle could then be used to light further candles, fires etc. This was used in households from the 18th Century until the invention of reliable matches.
It measures 19cm l x 9cm h at the highest point.
