This is a late 1800s coquilla nut pomander in the more unusual shape of a pear. The centre unscrews and fresh herbs, spices, flowers of a sponge impregnated with a fragrance were put inside. This was a way of masking unpleasant odors. They were also given as gifts at Christmas time and seen as a symbol for protection and good luck.
