A mid 1800s lidded sycamore spice box retaining all of its seven spice pots inside the box. The lid with its turned knob has a transfer print of Crystal Palace in London, the site for the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. A very unusual subject matter for this type of spice box.
The lidded pots inside the box each have a named spice on the lid, Cloves, Allspice, Saffron, Pepper, Mace, Cinnamon< Vanilla. Some of these are rarely seen on spice pots including saffron.
This box came from the Dr Reckless collection, the author of the recently published book on Nutmeg Graters, Pomanders & Spice Boxes.
It measures 17cm w x 7cm h excl the knoc.
