A pair of 19th century, probably fruitwood, Brighton Buns of very nice colour.

These  rather clever folding candlesticks were used by explorers from the Canadian Frontier in the 18th century, by the military British senior army officers, and people travelling to the holy land. On one side of these Brighton Buns there is a small picture, so probably indicating that it was used by people travelling to Jerusalem.

They consist of two drip -pan bases with candle cups which screw in to the base to provide two chambersticks. When not in use the candle cups and sometimes also candle snuffers are unscrewed and stored in the bases which in turn screw together to get the Brighton Bun!!

These Brighton Buns have been made from all sorts of materials ranging from brass, copper, bronze and even silver, Queen Charlotte, the consort of George 111 owned a silver one dated 1808, crocodile leather and yes good old wood was also used, although fairly infrequently.  Wood ones mainly tended to be made from olive wood but ocassionally you maybe lucky to find an antique treen Brighton Bun made from walnut, elm ebony or yew.

Hepplewhite and Co. described Brighton Buns as uniting elegance with utility- praise indeed.

They measure 11.5cm w x 4.5cm h when closed

Antique Brighton Bun Candlesticks

We first became involved in Antique Treen and furniture some twenty five years ago and since then a passion for Treen, small wooden snuff boxes and decorative wooden items has developed into Opus Antiques.

This web site shows only a  small selection of our current stock for sale, if you are looking for something you don't see, please contact us.

We are also interested in buying Antique Treen items. As well as using our Contact page, you can also email or telephone us on 07941 285532

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
