This lovely little pin cushion is a hand-stitched motto pincushion, most likely dating from around 1850. Made from homespun or early machine-woven linen or cotton. These were small, stuffed cushions, often filled with sawdust, sand, or bran - used for holding sewing pins and needles.
The motto is either red silk or wool floss, cross-stitched by hand with a hand-stitched seam typical of cottage work.
The front says “Prepare to meet thy God” “God is love” and the back which is worn in places looks like it says
“The Lord is my helper” “Christ is all”.
This combination of verses and affirmations was common in mid-Victorian evangelical or missionary work, often stitched by women and girls in Sunday schools or Bible societies, reflecting faith and moral readiness.
The pin cushion measures approx 3.8cml x 3.5cm w.
