A Georgian English pounce pot made from lignum vitae. It is a very well turned piece of treen made from two sections. It has a saucer shaped top of traditional form, which unscrews to refill, with holes in the centre for shaking the pounce out. The baluster body has moulded and turned decoration. It has an excellent colour and good patination. There is a small old repair to the base on the rim.
These small pots were used to store pounce, before the invention of blotting paper, the pounce was sprinkled on to the paper and then any remaining pounce, which was expensive, was poured back into the pot via the saucer shaped top.
