This is a lovely Tunbridge Ware box veneered with rosewood on the sides, the top has 3D tumbling block/cube decoration. Each square is a different wood like laburnum, ebony, oak etc which give a great contrasting and striking appearance.
Inside the box is the original lining paper and a label with the name S. F. CUST TUNBRIDGE WELLS.
The S. F. Cust probably refers to the elite family of Custs and the box is highly likely to have belonged to Lady Sophia Frances Cust. Lady Sophia was a close friend to princess Victoria, the future Queen Victoria. They visited and stayed in Tunbridge Wells a lot attending local races, promenades and parties. It was probably purchased on one of her trips to Tunbridge Wells or given to her as a present whilst staying there.
Lady Sophia Custs family house was Belton House in Lincolnshire.
The box measures 15.2cm w x 10cm d x 6.2cm h.
