This is a 19th century knitting sheath with a chain, swivel link and two pronged hooks for the ball of wool and/or to support the knitting. There is chip - carved decoration to the hook and interestingly to the spiral body, the latter being a feature of Timothy Tarn and his predecessors in Middleton in Teesdale, along with the swivel link also being a feature.
The length of the knitting sheath is 43cm.
These knitting sheaths are the most elaborate group of knitting sheaths, having a long chain terminating in a hook. The carving of the chain was a time consuming process, starting by sawing a rod of wood into a cross section, then cutting away alternating pieces the two arms until the chain is formed.
