A Victorian novelty snuff box carved in the shape of a coffin.
Coffin snuff boxes are a slightly macabre form of snuff box that became especially popular in the late 18th and 19th centuries. They were designed in the shape of miniature coffins which reflected a period fascination with mortality, mourning, remembrance, and “memento mori” symbolism.
There are two lids to the top. of this snuff box. The first inlaid with a heart swings out and then the lid with the diamond which sits beneath swings out to access the contents.
Hearts and diamonds are traditionally used to represent love, affection etc.
The box measures 8cm l x 3cm w at the widest point.
