This lovely Irish  Killarney book slide is made from arbutus wood, very similar to yew wood. Arbutus wood is grown in the south west of Ireland particularly around the Killarney Lakes.

On both ends of the book holder there are shamrocks inlaid on the outside and then inlaid stringing creating a cross on the inside.

The book slide can be extended for books if required.

The book slide measures 42cm w x 14cm d, when extended it can measure unto 67cm w.

A very useful and decorative piece.

This antique  wooden marquetry book slide is a fine example of Killarney Ware, an Irish form of folk art practiced in Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe, Ireland during the mid to late 19th century. Killarney Ware was largely produced for the tourist trade and utilized local woods including holly, yew and arbutus, a highly prized close grained wood which yellows with age.

    ANTIQUE TREEN

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
