This is a great french ebony engine turned  snuff box by Jacques Edouard Gatteaux. It has Josephus Haydn, the Austrian composer on the front central pannel and the name J Gatteaux underneath, the maker.

On the otherside of the box it says Tercentenary, Anniversary 1864, representing Shakespeare's birth date. It looks like Shakespeare surrounded by angels.

The box measures 8.5cm w x 1.8cm h.

Jacques-Édouard Gatteaux (4 November 1788 – 9 February 1881) was a French sculptor and medal engraver. Born in Paris, he studied under his father Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux (also a medal engraver) and Jean-Guillaume Moitte.
