This lovely antique treen knitting sheath originates from Eskdale, the Esk valley runs from Whitby into the North Yorkshire Moors. It is square in section and has a distinctive form, very few can be provenanced to this area. It has nice chip carving and a ball and cage with two balls in it. Although not dated a very similar one in the book is dated 1789. There are a couple of faint initials to the shaft.
A really lovely example, measuring 18.5cm l.
