A 19th century lace folder, with chip carved decoration, roundels and a carved cross and initials R V on one side. On the other side are two roundels and a date 1897. It measures 7.3 cm w x 14.5cm l. Very minor loss to one corner.
These lace folders had several uses, firstly as the name suggests they were used to press and fold panels of lace. The finished lace panel would be dampened slightly and the lace folders would be gently pressed over the lace to smooth it out. The folder would also smooth the edges of the panels so that it would make it easier to join together the panels of lace if necessary.
Some lace folders were also very lightly heated and used to shape the lace and enhance its texture.
They were also used as ribbon winders.
These small lace folders could also have been used with lace bobbins to support the lace.
This lace panel being so decorative would suggest not only that it was a lovely tool to be used in the making of lace but also that it was made as a decorative keepsake for the owner.
