This Scottish 19th century penwork and painted sycamore rectangular snuff box is by Russell, from Glasgow. The lid is decorated with two huntsmen mounted on horses with swords in their hands. One of them is pointing to a windmill in the distance. There are a few fallen trees behind the huntsmen. The hinged is completely invisible a feature of the famous "Cumnock" style of Scottish box-making.
On the inside, stamped in the lid is the makers name RUSSELL.
In the 19th century, Russell was a well known Glasgow-based producer and retailer famous for crafting and decorating Scottish Mauchline ware and painted sycamore snuff boxes.
