This is a great, large sized mahogany cased compass, dating from the late 1800s. It has the makers name on the compass face H.Hughes & Sons London.
A well made piece, measuring 21cm w x 20.5cm d x 4cm h.
Hughes and Sons were established in 1828 and were originally clock makers in the East End of London who later supplied sextants and chronometers to ships coming into the Thames. The partnership was headed by Alexander Hughes, son of Henry Hughes (w.1835-79, d.1879). From 1879-1941 the company traded at 59 Fenchurch St., London England & in 1903 was incorporated as a limited company.
