This is a 19th century lignum vitae 'Go to Bed', larger than most. It has a slightly ribbed underside to the base, providing some friction to light a match.
It measures 7.8cm h x 5cm w
,A match would be inserted in the top of  lid and would give enough light to go to bed, rather than using a candle. They were also used as a desk items.
