This is an early 1800s antique treen go to bed turned from lignum vitae. This is one of the earlier examples, with a scalloped edge, with some very minor repairs. When you unscrew the lid there is a central section where a bottle of acid would have gone. Around the outside the matches were stored, at the time the tips of these matches were a paste of potassium chlorate, sugar and gum. To ignite the match the tip would have been dipped into the acid.
This is a very good example of an early go to bed, larger than most found. It measures 11.5cm h x 6cmw.
